The Kaleidoscopic Cube of KOOKS is a unique Possessed Item designed for practitioners who embrace the “eccentric, fantastic, or insane” nature of the universe. The Cube is a six-inch glass cube set into a heavy bronze square frame. It contains a trapped, multi-colored vapor which is a fragment of a chaotic trickster spirit that hums with a dissonant, unstable energy.
Description and Mechanics
The Cube is classified as an Artifact. To activate its chaotic potential, a Character must spend an Action to shake the device and perform a Communicating + BRAIN Bonus Skill Roll against an Easy Difficulty Target (DT) of 10 to commune with the spirit within.
- Activation Cost: Standard use of the Cube costs the user 3 Health Points (HP), treated as a 1st-Level Spell cost.
- Supernatural Risk: Because the spirit is unstable, perhaps even insane by the spirit world standards, rolling a natural 2 on any activation roll causes the entity to lash out, inflicting 1d6 damage directly to the user’s BRAIN Stat. This represents a long-term disability of psychic erosion that is slow to recover.
The Table of Pandemonium (2d10 Roll)
Upon a successful activation, the player rolls 2d10. Due to the 2d10 bell curve, extreme results (2 or 20) are rare, while middle-range outcomes are more stable and predictable.
| 2d10 Roll | Effect Category | Resulting Magical Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Harmful | Backfire: The Cube releases a Great Ball of Flame (3rd-Level Arcane) centered on the user, dealing 1d6 damage per caster level to everyone in a 20-ft. radius. |
| 3-5 | Comically Useless | The Giggling Vapor: The Cube emits constant Ghostly Sounds of high-pitched, mocking laughter and kazoo music centered on the user for 1 minute per level. |
| 6-8 | Useless/Quirk | Luminous Skin: The user’s skin begins to Emit Light in shifting neon colors for 1 hour. While useful as a torch, they suffer Disadvantage on all Subterfuge checks. |
| 9-11 | Useful (Utility) | Manna Manifestation: The Cube produces 2d4 Health Berries (flakes of manna) that each cure 1 HP when consumed. |
| 12-14 | Useful (Defense) | Vaporous Ward: The user is instantly warded by Magic Armor, gaining a +4 Armor Modifier for 1 hour per level. |
| 15-17 | Useful (Stealth) | Prismatic Cloak: The user becomes Invisible for 1 minute per level. The effect ends early if the user attacks. |
| 18-19 | Powerful | Might of the Mad: The user feels a surge of chaotic strength, gaining a +2 bonus to their BRAWN and BRAIN stats for the duration of the encounter. |
| 20 | The Miracle | Authentic Vision: The user gains the ability to see “pure reality,” piercing all deceptions, disguises, and invisibility for one minute. |
Special Interaction for Paladins
For a Paladin, relying on such a chaotic and “will-destroying” possessed item may be considered a violation of a Lawful Good alignment. If the GM determines the Cube’s use contradicts the Paladin’s code, the Character may face immediate complications or the temporary loss of divine status.
