This item appears as a single, heavy sheet of unblemished, high-grade parchment that feels cool and velvety to the touch. By day, it remains completely blank, revealing no ink or indentation. However, when a character sleeps with the parchment tucked beneath their head or pillow, it silently absorbs and records the raw, erratic energies of their subconscious mind.
I. Core Mechanics & Deciphering the Dream
Upon waking, the owner finds the parchment covered in intricate charcoal-like sketches, shifting runic scripts, or bizarre prose depicting their dreams. These images are highly unstable; they are bound to the sunlight and will fade back into complete blankness when the sun sets.
1. Deciphering the Record
Studying and interpreting the dream-record is mentally taxing, requiring 1 Health Point (HP) of life force from the reader (treated as a 0-Level Arcane Cantrip’s cost). Deciphering the symbols requires a Knowledge + BRAIN Bonus Skill Roll. The player rolls 2d10 and adds their bonuses. The result determines the depth of insight retrieved:
- DT 12 (Easy Challenge) – Subconscious Clarity: The dream was standard subconscious clutter. Analyzing it reveals a minor recurring motif. The character gains Advantage on their next Survival or Craftiness Skill Roll made during the day.
- DT 15 (Moderate Challenge) – Forgotten Memories: The parchment reconstructs a piece of the user’s personal past or local history. The dreamer unlocks a crucial memory regarding a specific NPC, faction, or relic, granting a permanent +2 bonus on all future Knowledge checks concerning that subject.
- DT 20 (Hard Challenge) – Prophetic Vision: The parchment captures a fleeting, sensory vision of a future event. The dreamer receives a single-use Prophetic Insight token, which can be spent at any point over the next 24 hours to grant Advantage on any attack roll, skill roll, or saving throw for themselves or an ally.
- DT 25 (Very Hard Challenge) – Cosmic Blueprint: The parchment acts as a ‘map of the echoes’. It reveals a profound secret, such as the exact location of a hidden dungeon entrance, a secret room, or the precise nature and Search/Disable DTs of a nearby trap, allowing the party to plan their delve with perfect strategic awareness.
II. Supernatural Risk: Nightmare Backlash
As with all magical objects curated by the Keepers of Odd Knowledge Society, probing the veil of sleep is not entirely safe.
1. Psychic Backlash
Deciphering the parchment requires navigating chaotic psychic frequencies. If the reader rolls a natural 2 on their Knowledge check, they are overwhelmed by bizarre, sanity-straining images. The reader immediately suffers 1d4 damage directly to their BRAIN Stat (not their HP). This damage represents creeping paranoia or debilitating insomnia, acting as a long-term disability that can only be restored through extensive bed rest or medical care.
2. External Corruption
If a psychic or nightmare-weaving entity – such as a mad Allip, a Succubus-Siren, or an evil necromancer – is within 60 feet of the sleeping character, they can actively corrupt the parchment’s records. Deciphering a corrupted parchment requires a BRAIN Bonus + Skill (Will Save) against a DT of 15. On a failure, the reader accepts a beautifully woven, false dream as absolute truth, allowing the GM to lead the party into a dangerous trap.
III. Paladin Alignment Complications
For Paladins, relying on an item that exposes the unfiltered, chaotic depths of the mortal mind is highly risky. If the parchment’s bizarre imagery leads the Paladin to act on false paranoia, navigate outside of a Lawful Good alignment, or violate their code, they face immediate complications or the temporary loss of their divine status.
IV. The Dream Prompt Table (2d10 Roll)
To determine what is drawn on the parchment upon waking, the player rolls 2d10. Because of the 2d10 bell curve, middle-range outcomes (9–11) represent common subconscious reflections, while the extreme edges (2 and 20) indicate rare, highly dangerous, or profoundly prophetic revelations.
| Roll | Dream Category | Narrative Imagery & Adventure Hooks | Mechanical Advantage / Complication |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Nightmare Backlash (Severe) | The Spore in the Skull: You dream of a tiny, glittering violet seed being planted into your brain. You watch in horror as it consumes your memories, replacing them with a cold, malevolent intelligence that whispers: ‘We are one now.’ You wake up screaming, clawing at your forehead. | Psychic Backlash: The character suffers 1d4 BRAIN Stat damage instead of HP. This represents a lingering mental disability that can only be cured by two weeks of dedicated bed rest. |
| 3 | Nightmare / Omen (Minor) | The Closed Mirror: You stand before a massive, ornate silver mirror, but your reflection does not mimic you. Instead, your double (one of the Mirrorborn) grins, taps the glass from the other side, and whispers: ‘Soon, we will trade places.’ | Paranoia: The character suffers a -1 penalty on BRAIN-based rolls for the next 24 hours as they obsessively avoid shiny surfaces. |
| 4 | Confusing Signs | The Dark Choke Point: You find yourself standing in a narrow canyon choke point as a rising black tide of sharp teeth and rustling morningstars climbs the walls. In the sky, a cracked obsidian moon spins wildly, splitting reality into shards. | Atmospheric Clue: These are premonitions of a future attack. The character gains Advantage on their next Initiative roll when ambushed. |
| 5 | Forgotten Memory | The Starving Vow: You dream of a cold, suffocating stone mausoleum. Beside you is someone who smiles at you as the stone door is rolled shut, sealing you both inside to starve. You recall a forgotten oath you once made to a childhood sweetheart or a family member. | Subconscious Revelation: Resolving this personal history grants the player a permanent +2 bonus on Knowledge checks related to their own family lineage. |
| 6 | Forgotten Memory | The Cold Wood: You wander through a forest of massive, towering elms. You find a buried wooden chest containing toy soldiers, but when you touch them, they turn to cold, wet ash. You remember a secret hiding place from your youth. | Hidden Cache: The character remembers the location of a forgotten stash. If they seek it out, they find 1d10 x 10 gp or a useful piece of adventuring gear. |
| 7 | Impending Warning | The Serpent’s Strike: In the pitch black, you hear a soft, dry hissing. A massive black serpent slithers across your chest, its fangs dripping with a glowing, pale-green venom. You wake up just as it rears back to strike. | Reflexive Guard: The character is highly alert. They gain Advantage on their next AGL-based Physical save to dodge an attack or trap today. |
| 8 | Impending Warning | The Heavy Lead: You feel an overwhelming weight on your left hand. You look down to find a heavy ring of dark, light-absorbing metal fused to your ring finger. It is so heavy you cannot lift your arm, and your shadow begins to choke you. | Aura Awareness: A warning of a magical danger. The character gains a +2 bonus on saves against mind-controlling magic or possession today. |
| 9 | Subconscious Clutter | The Kind Companion: A small, kitten-like creature made of translucent, swirling colors leaps onto your bed, chasing a spectral mouse. It curls up on your chest, radiating a warm, comforting hum. | Restful Sleep: The character feels exceptionally refreshed. They gain 2 temporary HP that last until their next long rest. |
| 10 | Subconscious Clutter | The Manna Frost: You dream of walking through a dry, barren wilderness under a blazing sun. Suddenly, white, frost-like flakes rain down from the sky, tasting of honey and coriander. You gather them eagerly before they melt. | Spiritual Provision: The dream provides minor spiritual nourishment. The character gains 1 temporary HP instantly upon waking (in addition to normal rest) that lasts until it is lost. |
| 11 | Subconscious Clutter | The Drowning Depths: You are falling through endless, murky green water. Huge, segmented shadows move beneath you, and a pair of glowing yellow eyes opens in the deep. You wake up gasping for air. | Vigilance: The dream leaves the character wary. They gain Advantage on Search checks to detect submerged hazards or aquatic ambushes today. |
| 12 | Magical Clue | The Three Leaves: You watch a serpent place three luminous green leaves onto the corpse of its dead mate, which instantly breathes and slithers away. A voice in the darkness chants: ‘Life is in the blood, but the leaf holds the spark.’. | Ritual Insight: If the character attempts to cast a healing or resurrection spell/ritual today, the HP cost is reduced by half. |
| 13 | Magical Clue | The Hum of the Scepter: You hold a rod of petrified oak wrapped in silver wire. Lightning strikes the tip, but instead of burning you, the electricity flows through your veins, singing a song of ancient storms. | Static Resonance: The character gains Advantage on Knowledge checks made to identify magical artifacts or electrical constructs today. |
| 14 | Prophetic Symbol (Foe) | The Rotten Feast: You sit at a magnificent banquet in a royal court, but as you eat, the food turns to writhing worms and insects, and the guests’ faces rot away into grinning ghoul skulls. | Danger Sense: The character senses treachery. They cannot be surprised during the first round of combat for the next 24 hours. |
| 15 | Prophetic Symbol (Ally) | The Trident of Hope: A towering, angelic figure clad in shimmering dark armor rises from a stormy sea, holding a brilliant trident aloft. The waves calm instantly at her presence. | Divine Favor: The character receives a Token of Hope. They can spend this token to grant Advantage to an ally’s roll once during the session. |
| 16 | Lost History | The Sinking Leviathan: You stand on the deck of a wooden sailing ship as a colossal whale drags the vessel down into a swirling vortex. In the vortex, you glimpse the ruined spires of a sunless, ancient city. | Planar Lore: The character gains deep historical insight. They gain a temporary +3 bonus on Knowledge checks regarding ancient ruins or lost civilizations. |
| 17 | Lost History | The Voice of the Tree: You press your ear against the bark of a massive, ancient tree. You hear a slow, deep heartbeat and a booming voice that speaks of kings who died before the first stone of the capital was laid. | Forest Communion: If the character enters a forest today, they can communicate basic concepts to plant life without needing the Speak with Plants spell. |
| 18 | Premonition of Fortune | The Golden Gamble: You are playing a card game called Two Dragons High with a dapper, well-dressed goblin. He winks, slides a massive pile of platinum coins toward you, and says: ‘It’s your lucky day, friend’. | Lucky Streak: The character receives Advantage on all Craftiness checks involving games of chance or sleight of hand for the next 24 hours. |
| 19 | Premonition of Fortune | The Opened Mirror: You step through a silver mirror into a distorted, shadowy duplicate of your room. On the desk, a beautiful brass orrery hums softly. You spin the central ring, and a secret drawer pops open, revealing a glowing ruby ring. | Echoes of Treasure: The character gains Advantage on Search/Perception checks made to find secret doors, hidden compartments, or concealed treasure chests today. |
| 20 | Cosmic Epiphany (Miracle) | The True Horizon: Your eyes are opened, and you see the world stripped of all illusion. People walk shrouded in shifting, colorful auras of light; invisible spirits drift through the air; and the path ahead is illuminated by a golden thread. | Prophetic Insight: The character receives a Prophetic Insight token. At any point today, they can spend this token to automatically succeed on one non-combat Skill Roll (treating the roll as a natural 20). |
V. GM Advice for Running the Parchment
- The Fade-to-Blank Rule: Remind the player that these sketches and writings fade when the sun sets. The bonus or token gained from deciphering must be used before the next long rest, or the psychic echo dissipates.
- Weaving the Narrative: Use these dream prompts as direct springboards for your adventure. For example, if a player rolls a 5 (The Starving Vow), have them encounter an NPC later that day who mentions a relative who went missing in an ancient burial vault.
- Synergy with Character Classes:
- If a Druid rolls a 17 (The Voice of the Tree), describe the experience with more spiritual, natural depth.
- If a Paladin rolls an 8 (The Heavy Lead), emphasize the cold, soul-chilling dread of the dark ring, warning them of the spiritual corruption that awaits if they succumb to selfish desires.
